Permanent Diaconate

PERMANENT DEACON FORMATION

The Sacred Order of Deacons was reestablished by the Second Vatican Council and was approved by Pope Paul VI for restoration in the United States in 1968. Permanent Deacons are ordained to be consecrated witnesses of service. They may be married or celibate. In communion with the bishop and priests where they serve, they are at the service of the People of God. They are engaged in the ministry of liturgy and sacrament, of the word and of charity. Their tasks include promoting and sustaining the apostolic activities of the laity, witnessing the gospel values through their ministry of liturgy and word, they bring the poor to the Church, the Church to the poor and articulate the Church’s concern for justice. Permanent Deacons are to be men of good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit, firmly rooted and grounded in faith and stewards of God’s mysteries.
